A proclamation was read at City Hall on Oct 20, 2008 that declared Nov 14 as "World Diabetes Awareness Day" Also, the staff of the diabetes education center had a kiosk set-up at the hospital to provide awareness to staff about the facts regarding diabetes. We had a blue candle on the table as well as interesting facts about diabetes.

On Friday November 13th PEI'S health minister Doug Currie read a proclomation in the legislature acknowledging November as diabetes month and November 14 world diabetes day. He also acknowledged the Canadian Diabetes Association for the work that we do for people living with Diabetes. Minister Currie also made mention of PEI's commitment to continuing and its plan for expanding care for people on PEI living with Diabetes.

On Thursday, November 19th, in honour of World Diabetes Day, the students of Grandview Heights Elementary School will be participating in a hula hoop challenge.

Company's Coming Cookbooks, publishers of three successful cookbooks of diabetic meals, will be holding their annual Scratch & Dent Sale with a portion of the proceeds benefitting JDRF. The event will be visited by the JDRF mascot and have a JDRF booth with information on programs and events. Donations will be accepted.

Taking Hold of Our Health: Launch of Youth Diabetes Prevention Video
The premiere of Taking Hold of Our Health -- a video showcasing local youth who participated in a diabetes prevention project -- will take place on Saturday, November 14, World Diabetes Day, 3:00 at the Black Cultural Centre. This educational video encourages youth to be active in preventing diabetes through physical activity, health living, cultural awareness and good nutrition. The video is the next step in moving forward with diabetes prevention in African Canadian youth in Nova Scotia. Come see our youth in action!

This launch is organized and supported by Health Association for African Canadians, Southeastern Community Health Board, Canadian Diabetes Association, Community Health and Wellness Center, and the Black Cultural Centre.

To commemorate the first UN-observed WDD I started a Resolution Torch of Diabetes Advocacy - This year we will be taking the Resolution Torch to the Joggins UNESCO World Heritage Site to complete a symbolic World Diabetes Day Walk, and receive from the Joggins UNESCO World Heritage Site a World Diabetes Day Proclamation and Resolution Torch living time capsule artifacts. We will also attempt to light part of the site in blue but we will have to see how that goes.

I have pre-booked Meds-checks for some of our diabetic patients that myself and my intern student will be conducting that day. I have also contacted the rep, Scott, from One Touch Ultra who has agreed to provide us with gifts/sample bags which will include some pens, diebetic log books and nutritional guidelines books that we can give to our patients who visit the pharmacy that day. We are also going to be setting up a table near the pharmacy to provide further awareness and information including the materials that we received from you for the diabetic clinic month. Lastly, we have wrist bands that each associate will wear that day to signify the World Diabetic Day.

The Diabetes Awareness Day Clinic was held in Portage La Prairie at the Wal-Mart for associates. I did blood sugar screening, nutritional counsel, provided information, did medication reviews on diagnosed patients and risk assessment on those interested. I screened 53 Wal-Mart associates, 4 of which had very high levels and were not previously aware that they should be monitoring their sugars and 2 of which had moderate levels. All will be following up with their doctors. I would say this was a successful and well received event and was enjoyable to execute
