Commemorated in 2007 as an official United Nation’s World Health Day, World Diabetes Day is marked every November 14 (the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, co-discoverer of insulin).
Since its inception, the Canadian Diabetes Association and JDRF Canada have united efforts to celebrate World Diabetes Day in Canada. Together, the Canadian Diabetes Association, JDRF Canada, founding sponsor Novo Nordisk Canada Inc. and silver sponsor Eli Lilly Canada are marking the day by honouring and celebrating Diabetes Champions.
Diabetes has reached epidemic proportions around the world and here in Canada. Today, more than 9 million Canadians live with diabetes or prediabetes – a condition that, if left unchecked, puts you at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Globally, more than 366 million people are affected by diabetes.
